Codeine changes starting 1st February 2018

From the 1st February 2018, all medicines containing codeine which
were previously available over-the-counter will now require a prescription.

What do these changes mean?

Pain relief options are available from your pharmacy; however, from 1st February 2018 products that contain codeine will require a prescription from your doctor. Your pharmacist can recommend the most effective options available and refer you to your doctor if further pain management is required.

Which medicines will be affected?

  • Paracetamol & codeine (e.g. Panadeine®, Panadeine Extra®, Mersyndol® etc)
  • Ibuprofen & codeine (e.g. Nurofen Plus®, Panafen Plus® etc.)
  • Aspirin & codeine (Aspalgin®, Codis Disprin Forte® etc)
  • Liquid Paracetamol & codeine (e.g. Painstop®, Painstop Night®)
  • Cough and cold medicines (e.g. Codral Original Cold & Flu®, Demazin Day & Night Cold & Flu®
