Sleep apnoea is a condition where breathing is repeatedly interrupted during sleep.1 There are two main types of sleep apnoea – obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) and
central sleep apnoea. A third type called mixed apnoea occurs when someone has a combination of the two. Each form of sleep apnoea has di erent causes and treatments. OSA is the most common form.

OSA results from the partial or complete collapse of the upper airway during sleep. These pauses in breathing can last from a few seconds to up to a minute.  The resulting fall in oxygen levels triggers a brief awakening, prompting the person to start breathing again. This can happen several times during the night. Many people may not even realise it is happening and the bed partner may be the one who notices these episodes. Others are aware of the problem, but do not know it is due to a medical condition.
